Acclaimed artist-in-residence Betty Buckley returns to 伊人直播

伊人直播 University is thrilled to welcome artist-in-residence Betty Buckley, legendary, multi-award-winning actress and singer whose illustrious career spans theatre, film, television, and concert halls worldwide. Buckley will return to campus for a workshop with 伊人直播 students from Wednesday, March 26, through Friday, March 28, followed by a public concert with Seth Rudetsky on Saturday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Walker Recital Hall.听

A recipient of honorary doctorates from Boston Conservatory of Music and Marymount Manhattan College, Buckley has taught at institutions including Boston University, University of Oklahoma, Syracuse University, Carnegie Mellon, and the University of North Texas, among others. She has also led workshops at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Eugene O鈥橬eill Theatre Festival and has served on the faculty at T. Schreiber Studio in New York City for over 50 years.听

A trailblazer in modern musical theatre, Buckley earned acclaim for her iconic roles in 鈥1776,鈥 鈥淧ippin,鈥 鈥淭he Mystery of Edwin Drood,鈥 鈥淐arrie,鈥 and 鈥淐ats,鈥 which earned her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She later received a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Hesione in 鈥淭riumph of Love鈥 and an Olivier Award nomination for her lauded portrayal of Norma Desmond in the London production of 鈥淪unset Boulevard,鈥 a role she reprised to further critical acclaim on Broadway. In 2018 and 2019, she headlined the first National Tour of the new Broadway production of鈥淗ello, Dolly!鈥澨

Her extensive Off-Broadway credits include 鈥淭he Old Friends鈥 (2014 Drama Desk nomination), 鈥淲hite鈥檚 Lies,鈥 鈥淛uno鈥檚 Swans,鈥 鈥淓dwin Drood鈥 for the NYSF, and 鈥淚鈥檓 Getting My Act Together and Taking it on the Road.鈥 Regional credits include 鈥淭he Perfectionist,鈥 鈥淕ypsy,鈥 鈥淭hreepenny Opera,鈥 鈥淐amino Real,鈥 鈥淏uffalo Gal,鈥 鈥淎rsenic and Old Lace,鈥 and 鈥淕rey Gardens鈥 (2016 Ovation Award nomination). 听听

She was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 2012 and has received numerous prestigious awards, including the 2017 Julie Harris Award for Lifetime Achievement from The Actors Fund and the 2023 American Songbook Association Lifetime Achievement Award. 听

Alongside her theatrical achievements, Buckley continues to work extensively in the film industry. She is featured in the new film 鈥淏y Design,鈥 written and directed by Amanda Kramer, which made its debut at The Sundance Film Festival in January 2025. She is also featured in the upcoming film 鈥淓ternity鈥 for A24 Studios, starring Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen. In March 2024, she co-starred in 鈥淚maginary鈥 for Blumhouse and Lionsgate. Other film credits include the M. Night Shyamalan hit film 鈥淪plit,鈥 in which she co-starred with James McAvoy and received a Saturn Award nomination, Shyamalan鈥檚 鈥淭he Happening,鈥 Lawrence Kasden鈥檚 鈥淲yatt Earp,鈥 Woody Allen鈥檚 鈥淎nother Woman,鈥 Roman Polanski鈥檚 鈥淔rantic,鈥 Bruce Beresford鈥檚 鈥淭ender Mercies,鈥 and Brian DePalma鈥檚 screen version of Stephen King鈥檚 鈥淐arrie.鈥澨

Buckley recently wrote, narrated, and produced 鈥淭he Mayfly,鈥 an animated short film directed by award-winning animator Sue Perrotto, with music by Buckley鈥檚 longtime musical director and accompanist Christian Jacob. Animated traditionally in 2D, 鈥淭he Mayfly鈥 is the story of Megalyn Mayfly, who goes against all expectations and dedicates her short life to music and dance on a quest that takes her from Central Park West to the Upper East Side's Carlyle Hotel. 鈥淭he Mayfly鈥 had its world premiere on March 24 at the American Documentary and Animation Film Festival (AmDocs) in Palm Springs, California, and has garnered critical acclaim at film festivals worldwide, including The Tribeca Film Festival in NYC.听

Buckley鈥檚 recent television credits include a recurring role on 鈥淟aw & Order: SVU鈥 for NBC. She co-starred in the third season of AMC鈥檚 hit series 鈥淧reacher鈥 and has guest-starred on 鈥淭he Cleaning Lady,鈥 鈥淪upergirl,鈥 鈥淐hicago Med,鈥 and 鈥淧retty Little Liars.鈥 For HBO, she appeared on 鈥淕etting On,鈥 鈥淭he Leftovers,鈥 鈥淭he Pacific,鈥 and for three seasons on 鈥淥Z.鈥 She also played everyone鈥檚 favorite stepmother, Abby Bradford, in the drama series 鈥淓ight is Enough.鈥澨

In 2022, Buckley released the compilation recording 鈥淏etty Buckley Sings Stephen Sondheim鈥 as a tribute to the late composer. The recording consists of 24 songs previously recorded throughout her career. Buckley has recorded 18 CDs, including 鈥淗ope,鈥 released in 2018; 鈥淪tory Songs,鈥 released in April 2017; and 鈥淕hostlight,鈥 produced by T Bone Burnett, released in 2014. 听She has received two Grammy nominations and tours extensively in concert with her ensemble of musicians. 听

Buckley has been honored with three Lifetime Achievement Awards for her contributions to theatre from the New England Theatre Conference, The Shubert Theater in New Haven, and the T. Schreiber School in New York City. 听For her work in the national tour of 鈥淗ello, Dolly!鈥, she was honored with the Sarah Siddons Award for outstanding performance in a Chicago Theatrical Production.听

For her March 29 concert, Buckley will be joined by SiriusXM host, pianist, conductor, writer, and performer Seth Rudetsky.听

Rudetsky spent many years on Broadway as a pianist and conductor, as well as two years as a comedy writer on 鈥淭he Rosie O鈥橠onnell Show,鈥 for which he received three Emmy nominations with his co-writers. He is now the afternoon deejay on the SiriusXM Broadway channel as well as the host of 鈥淪eth Speaks.鈥 He has performed his show 鈥淒econstructing Broadway鈥 in London, Boston (Irne award), and L.A. (with Barbra Streisand in the audience!). He co-wrote and co-starred in 鈥淒isaster!鈥 (NY TIMES critics鈥 pick) on Broadway, which was licensed by Music Theatre International and is being performed around the country. His books include 鈥淪eth鈥檚 Broadway Diary Volume 1 and 2鈥 (Dress Circle publishing), 鈥淢y Awesome/Awful Popularity Plan鈥 and 鈥淭he Rise and Fall of a Theatre Geek鈥 (Random House), and the recently released 鈥淢usical Theatre for Dummies.鈥澨
